One of Adelaide’s most prestigious boys’ colleges is the latest private school to jack up its fees, with parents set to pay more than $30,000 per year, for years 10 to 12.
St Peter’s College contacted parents on Wednesday afternoon notifying them of a 5.9 per cent fee hike.
This takes the Year 12 fee from $29,450 per student in 2023 to $31,190 next year, making it likely to be the state’s priciest private school yet again next year.
Meanwhile, overseas students will pay $48,230 for an elite education.
St Peter’s College council of governors chairman Mark Balnaves said the jump was “in line with the latest consumer price index for Adelaide”.
As part of our ongoing commitment to provide an exceptional community of learning, we continue to invest in our staff to ensure we attract and retain the best people,” Mr Balnaves wrote to parents.
“The majority of the increase is directly attributable to staff costs, but also includes the impact of rising operating costs, in particular electricity and insurance.
“While we continue to benefit from our significant investment in renewable energy generation, unfortunately the grid supplied element of our electricity needs is now at a significantly higher cost than prior years.”
All up, parents spent more than 42 per cent of their yearly wage to send their children to a private school this year, according to modelling done by The Advertiser.
The Advertiser compared Year 12 fees charged this year and in 2013 by 12 independent and Catholic schools and found they had blown out by between $3160 and $8360.
The biggest increases over that period were at Walford Anglican School for Girls (39.7 per cent more), St Peter’s Girls’ School (37.2 per cent) and Pulteney Grammar School (36.6 per cent).
The smallest fee increases were at Mercedes College and Rostrevor College (both about 28 per cent) and Scotch College (29 per cent).
