Two secondary schools in the spotlight for violence are receiving improvements worth a total of $870,000.
Golden Grove High School, which controversially removed toilet doors to combat vaping before fights filmed by students went viral on social media, is getting toilet upgrades costing $750,000.
Whyalla Secondary College, a brand new “super school” which received widespread publicity over violence between its students, will have $120,000 spent on its security system, including CCTV.
The projects are among 62 extra capital works projects totalling $18.5m across the state’s primary and secondary schools announced by Education Minister Blair Boyer.
Others include new toilets at Virginia Primary School, Fairview Primary School, Oak Valley Aboriginal School and Lake Wangarry Primary School, while Gulfview Heights Primary School, Elizabeth South Primary School, Balaklava High School, Hicks Avenue Primary School and Salisbury Downs Primary School will get new airconditioning.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars will each be spent on improving disability access at Brighton Secondary School, Oakbank Area School and Para Hills High School.
Mr Boyer said the extra $18.5m was in addition to the $62.5m already allocated in this year’s state budget for school capital works projects.
He said the money needed to be spent to “improve school facilities and provide safer learning environments for staff and students”.
“These upgrades will include things such as roof repairs, disability access, toilet upgrades, security and bitumen replacements,” he said.
“This is on top of our significant investment in school infrastructure upgrades and building five new technical colleges across our state.”
Mr Boyer said all of the additional projects had been determined as high priority by the Education Department.
