South Australian school-leavers are among the brightest in the world and they have the results to show it with some of the best International Baccalaureate (IB) results anywhere.

Three students have achieved perfect scores, including an elite young volleyball player.

The IB Diploma is a two-year internationally-recognised course studied by students in year 11 and 12, in place of SACE, offered at some public and independent schools in Adelaide.

Students at Glenunga International High School and Pembroke School are among the highest achievers while the state’s Roma Mitchell Secondary College in Adelaide’s north is proudly celebrating its first IB graduates.

Three students – one from co-ed public school Glenunga and two from independent Kensington Park co-ed school Pembroke – achieved perfect scores of 45 which transfer to the highest possible ATAR of 99.95.

Both schools also achieved an average result of 38 in 2022, higher than both the national and global average scores, of 35.6 and 30.9 respectively.

Glenunga IB leader Corin Bone said 54 students completed the program at his school in 2022.

“We’ve seen record results … our average is almost 2 per cent higher than it has been in the past,” Mr Bone said.

“We’ve had 22 students achieve scores over 40 and that is a record for us … in addition to one student achieving 45, we’ve had a huge number of kids getting 42, 43 and 44.”

A score of 40 equates to an ATAR of 98.

Described as an “academically challenging pre-university matriculation course” it is offered to over 200,000 students in more than 5000 schools in 153 countries worldwide.

The global aspect of the learning appealed to Pembroke student Emma Guenther, 17, also an U18 state volleyball player in 2022, who achieved a perfect score and is now hoping to study medicine in the UK or Germany after taking a gap year to travel.

“I felt it was really cool to learn from different parts of the world … (the program) is very globally-minded,” she said.

“I would come home from volleyball (six or seven days a week) at 9pm and then have to work so it was intense … but it was really cool and taught me a lot about juggling things,” she said.

Fourteen students at Pembroke achieved a score of 40 and above, including Hannah Zheng who also achieved a maximum 45 and Sun Jiu (Jerry) Long and Yuhan Wang who each achieved a near perfect 44.

Glenunga school-leaver Caitlin West, 18, who studied her IB Diploma in the Netherlands, where her parents were working at the time, also attained a perfect score.

She is planning to study engineering at Adelaide University this year.

“I think (the IB) is a great thing, having lived overseas at DenHaag I could have some continuity when we returned to Adelaide,” she said of her six months at British School of the Netherlands.

Other top-scoring students from Glenunga are Rishab Sridhar (44), Tara Roberts (44) and Melissa Campbell (44).

Roma Mitchell Secondary College’s Krish Rampal, 17, who hopes to study medicine in Queensland, is among the first of 11 students at his school to complete the diploma, scoring 33.

“I hope it could inspire future students to follow in my path,” he said.

Deputy principal Lorraine Securo said she was incredibly proud of the ”history-making” cohort, which includes Tina Tran, who scored an IB of 34.

“We are a young school in the northern suburbs and we have just shown that we are world class,” she said.

The top performing students of Adelaide’s IB schools were invited to an event at Mercedes College yesterday.

In 2022, 21 of that school’s students completed their IB with four achieving results of 40 or higher – including Georgina Harvey, Isabelle Stein and Sascha Spoor who each got 43.

The average across the cohort was 37.

“It has been through teamwork and adaptability that we could overcome difficult and unique challenges and achieve a 100 per cent completion rate in 2022 – it shows how resilient we can be if we put our minds to it,” school IB co-ordinator Marc Whitehead said.

At St Peter’s Girls’ school Xingzi Zhang achieved a near-perfect IB score of 44.

Prince Alfred College had 11 students compete their IB with Aeden Bolwell, Captain of Boarding, also achieving a high score of 44. He was closely followed by Ruban Japp who got a score of 43.

St Peter’s Boys School’s Xander Grice achieved a score of 43 and Charlie Wells a score of 42

According to IB Schools Australasia there were 362 IB Diploma students in SA last year.
