A straw-bale yurt on a Dandenong Ranges property crowned No. 2 in Airbnb’s most wishlisted stays is among the list, as is an enchanting treehouse made from a “treasure trove” of recycled materials.

But there’s also a raft of quirky homes in unsung regional and coastal townships that made the cut, as well as some of the city’s oldest builds still standing strong today.

You might even spot a famous face or two, as some of the state’s best properties have inevitably been home to a swath of notable owners over the years.

An iconic Fairhaven beach house known for featuring as Max Rockatansky’s hide-out in the original Mad Max movie earned a place, after it was sold last year by Shark Tank and Survivor star Janine Allis.
