Teenage girl critical after falling from car in Altona

The family of a Melton South teenager who fell from the roof of a moving car say the young mum will be in a coma for the next two weeks.

Leka Hafoka, 17, was celebrating Samoa’s Rugby League World Cup win near the Esplanade and Davies St in Altona on Monday night when the tragedy unfolded.

It’s alleged Ms Hafoka and three friends were on the roof of a moving Mini Cooper when they fell to the ground about 11.30pm.

Ms Hafoka was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with critical head injuries.

Her family member, Otaota Faaiu, told the Herald Sun the mum of one was placed in a coma where she will remain for the next 10 days.

“We’re hurting but we are staying strong for her and letting the doctors do their job,” she said.

Ms Hafoka’s family friend, Terisa Petelo, described her as a “fighter” on social media.

“You’re a fighter my girl Leka Hafoka, you got this,” she said.

“Your beautiful daughter (is) waiting for you at home, we love you.”

One of Ms Hafoka’s mates was also injured during the incident but two others escaped without harm.

A 21-year-old Braybrook man was charged with seven offences including dangerous driving causing serious injury, recklessly causing serious injury and failing to assist.

The man was also charged for driving without an appropriate supervising driver while being on a learner’s licence.

A 21-year-old Caroline Springs man was charged with reckless conduct endangering serious injury and driving in a manner dangerous.

The two men were bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court in January next year.

Ms Hafoka was just one of thousands of sporting fans who celebrated Samoa’s win over France.

Footage of the wild crowds were posted to social media, showing people dancing on cars and doing burnouts.

Reggae tunes were blasted from speakers as supporters waved Samoan flags.

It’s understood the rowdy celebrations began at 4pm and carried on until 11pm.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
