Melbourne’s iconic Kingston Heath Golf Course will host the Presidents Cup golf tournament in 2028 as Australia’s sporting capital hosts the major event a historic fourth time.

The PGA Tour and State Government will on Tuesday morning announce some of the world’s best golfers will tee off at the Cheltenham course in Melbourne’s famed sandbelt region.

The 2028 Presidents Cup will be the fourth time it has been staged in Melbourne, tying the record for the most times in one city with Gainesville, Virginia in the US.

Melbourne will host the Presidents Cup again in 2040 thanks to a landmark deal secured last year.

PGA Tour championship management senior vice president Matt Rapp said he was excited to

“further cement the history and future of this event in the great city of Melbourne.

“The Sandbelt region is home to some of the game’s most iconic venues, and Kingston Heath has proven to be a world-class host for a number of golf’s biggest tournaments.

“We are looking forward to contesting an incredible Presidents Cup that Australians can take tremendous pride in, showcasing Kingston Heath to golf fans around the world.”

The government estimates previous Presidents Cups in Melbourne in 1998, 2011 and 2019 generated a combined economic impact of more than $121 million.

The past three events were also credited with attracting more than 315,000

spectators including 47,000 visitors to Victoria and thousands of hours of global broadcasts.

Tourism, Sport and Major Events Minister Steve Dimopoulos said the biennial global team competition would see golf fans from around the world turned their attention to Melbourne.

“The Presidents Cup solidifies Melbourne’s position as one of the greatest golf destinations on the planet and we can’t wait to welcome this event to Kingston Heath in 2028,’’ he said.

“Our long-term partnership with PGA TOUR will deliver two high-calibre events – showcasing our city as a must-visit golfing destination to viewers from around the world and reinforcing Victoria’s status as the major events capital of Australia.”

Kingston Heath, one of the world’s best courses, will become the fifth international venue to host the Presidents Cup.

The course has previously hosted the Australian Open seven times, the 2016 World Cup of Golf, 2008 Women’s Australian Open, and 2009 and 2012 Australian Masters.

Kingston Heath captain Stephen Montfort said the club was excited to welcome fans and players from around the world.

“Kingston Heath has a long and proud history of hosting major events and celebrating the best golfers in the world on our championship course,’’ he said.

“The opportunity to host a world-renowned iconic event celebrating the best players in the

game is incredibly exciting.’’

Next year’s President’s Cup will be staged in Montreal, from September 24-29.
