UPDATE: POLICE have confirmed they are no longer investigating a reported car jacking in Townsville City yesterday.
Police were initially called to Stanley Place at 5.05pm on Thursday to reports two people threatened a man in a Mazda 3 and stole his car.
The man told police the attackers threatened him with a knife, punched him in the face and took off with the car.
He told police the car was last seen driving along Stanley St towards Castle Hill.
Police attended the scene at the corner of Stanley and Wills Sts and questioned the man.
But the Townsville Bulletin can confirm the incident was not as it was first reported, and police have dropped the investigation.
No charges have been laid.
BREAKING: POLICE are hunting for two carjackers in a stolen car after a brazen attack in Townsville’s CBD on Thursday afternoon.
A Queensland Police spokeswoman said incident took place near Stanley Place at the intersection of Wills St and Stanley Street at 5.05pm.
The victim told police he was seated in his friend’s silver Mazda 3 hatchback when he was approached by two people.
They allegedly threatened him with a knife and told him to drive before punching him in the face and escaping with the vehicle.
The car was last seen headed outbound on Stanley St towards Castle Hill.
No suspects are in custody and the police investigation was ongoing.
They have appealed for help locating the missing Mazda with the number plate 961 DI9.
