Gumlu crash: Greyhound bus driver arrested, charged after three women died, dozens injured

Police have arrested the 52-year-old Townsville driver of the Greyhound bus involved in a fatal crash that claimed the lives of three women in June.

Police have arrested and charged the 52-year-old driver of the Greyhound bus involved in a fatal crash that claimed the lives of three women in June.

About 11.05am on Sunday, June 30, the bus with 33 people on board was travelling north along the Bruce Highway.

Police will allege the bus crossed onto the wrong side of the road and struck a Landcruiser station wagon coming the opposite way, which was towing a caravan.

Townsville grandmother Emma ‘Alli’ Sailor, 56 and German women Aliya Tonga, 21 and Marissa Martin, 33 were killed and dozens more were injured when the bus collided with a caravan being towed by a four-wheel drive at Gumlu just after 11am on June 30.

After “extensive investigations”, police on Tuesday charged 52-year-old Peter Jason Cafe with five counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death or grievous bodily harm.

Cafe is charged with three counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death.

He is further charged with two counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing grievous bodily harm in relation to Tyla Dickinson and Dylan Davis.

Cafe was charged today following an investigation by the Mackay forensic crash unit.

He was denied watchouse bail by police and appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court.

He was granted bail by Magistrate Joseph Pinder on his own undertaking with the matter adjourned to Bowen on September 24.
