CAMM Quarries and Concrete meets strong Townsville demand with new fixed plant

Townsville’s only local concrete supplier has gone to the next level with a new multimillion-dollar facility. Read why the investment was necessary.

Recognising the need for a local concrete supplier to meet Townsville’s growing construction demand, a family owned and operated facility has stepped up with a multimillion-dollar investment.

A second-generation family business, the Doyle Group has operated in Townsville for the past 65 years, with its founder and owner Jeffrey Doyle expanding their operations into quarrying with the purchase of the first CAMM Quarries site at Roseneath in 2017.

Named after Mr Doyle’s four children, Courtney, Ashleigh, Matthew and Mitchell, the CAMM Group added a secondary quarry location at Clemant in 2019, and a Kelso sand extraction operation called Townsville Graded Sands, before launching CAMM Concrete in 2021.

After starting out at Roseneath with a mobile plant and two trucks, CAMM Quarries and Concrete operations manager Aiden Wherry said they grew their fleet to 12 trucks over the past 18 months – paving the way to construct a fixed, ready-mix concrete production facility.

Worth $2.5 million, the “lifetime plant” was procured within Australia and built with the support of local suppliers and contractors over a five month period – coming online in May.

“All the raw materials come from our quarries and from our sand business, and we make the concrete ourselves, and then we supply it into the market,” Mr Wherry said.

“We probably overachieved our first year, 100 per cent on the volumes that I’d anticipated, so we do have a good core group of customers. We see that there is a fair bit of uptick in the market, so definitely built this as a future investment.

“It means we can take more on board, so we’ve gone from basically a 50 cubic metre an hour plant to 120 cubic metre an hour.”

CAMM caters to clients ranging from DYI backyard slabs to major projects, industrial, commercial, civil works, road construction, and local house builders, who pour about two slabs per day.

Due to the lifespan of wet concrete, they only serviced the local area with the new plant, but their mobile plant was expected to range further afield, supporting projects like Copperstring.

“We think that Townsville’s going strong. We are the only local supplier in town where … all the money generally stays within the area. We want to supply local jobs and keep local jobs going as well,” he said.

To celebrate the fixed plant’s official opening, CAMM hosted a Family Fun Day at the end of September, where over 200 friends, family, suppliers, and the general public took a peek behind the scenes.
