Aldi has revealed when it is opening its highly anticipated Townsville supermarket as it calls for applicants to fill “good paying” jobs.
In a job advertisement, the discount supermarket chain is offering $29.04 plus penalties per hour for untrained retail assistants aged 18 years and above.
The German multinational also states that the new store at Willows Shopping Centre in Thuringowa Central is “due to open in mid-November”.
The company, which will join Coles and Woolworths at Willows, boasts that it employs “good people” for “good pay” and provides “good training”.
The $29.05 pay rate is well above Queensland’s $23.23 per hour minimum wage.
Aldi is promising new retail assistants “variety in every shift”.
“Whether you’re filling shelves or scanning items for customers, you’ll be trained to handle multiple roles throughout the store.”
The supermarket says previous retail experience is not required.
“But we are looking for people to join our teams who have a positive attitude, a hardworking spirit and the willingness to learn.”
Aldi, which recently signed a new lease at Willows, says applicants must have reliable transport to get to and from work safely and that it has a rotating roster with an average of 15 to 35 hours per week.
Back in May when it was first announced the store would be coming, Willows centre manager Ryan Wheelhouse said the community was excited about the value Aldi offered “ … making Willows the only centre north of southeast Queensland to house all three supermarket chains under the one roof”.
In the jobs ad, Aldi says that in addition to training and development, it offers “career progression opportunities in our growing store network”.
There is also speculation that Aldi could be planning to open a store in Cairns.
Willows and Aldi have been contacted for comment.
Aldi recently announced it would begin offering online shopping to remain competitive with Coles and Woolworths in Australia.
It is hoped the new North Queensland store will help keep grocery prices low, with its brand selling products for 15 to 20 per cent less than its competitors.
