Getting their music and live performances back in motion, a Townsville band is returning to the scene much to the delight of fans.

Motions, currently consisting of Ted Walker, Jason Fimmel and Justin Fimmel, first started as a band in 2017. The group went on hiatus due to member Ted Walker moving away, but are set to return this month with a new single and a gig at their much-loved ‘second home’, Otherwise Bar in Townsville.

Drummer Justin Fimmel said the band started off as a duo, until he recruited his brother Jason as lead guitarist.

“We did our last Townsville show around three years ago, we did a run with Polaris and Deadlights,” he said.

“It is exciting to be coming back after that time. When Otherwise Bar first opened up we were one of the first bands to play, alongside Waax from Brisbane.”

Mr Fimmel said in the past few years he has continued to play music and make material with country singers such as Taylor Moss, but said it is great to be making music again on a personal level.

“The fact that we are coming back, it’s nice to have our own new material and know that you can get fully emotionally invested in it,” he said.

“(Motions) is our bay, so it’s nice to get jamming and talk band stuff again.”

During their hiatus Mr Fimmel said people in the community would stop and ask him when the band was getting back together.

“I always had to tell people that we’ve had someone move away, but it’s great now that we can actually say we have new music coming out and a gig coming up.”
On their music sound, Motions described their sound as a mix of nice vocals with heavier sounds, citing Deftones as influences.

“Ted is a great singer, we have those heavy tunes mixed with his nice vocals,” Mr Fimmel said.

“After a show in Brisbane someone described us as if Bon Iver went heavy and it think that’s a good way to put it.”

The band’s new single to be released on August 9 is titled ‘Concrete’ and features Dylan Davison from Deadlights on guest vocals.

Mr Fimmel said their new single is ‘more punchy and upbeat’ compared to previous songs.

“Motions stuff can be a bit more slower and dragged out, but this one is more upbeat than people may be used to,” he said.

“We have another single coming out in either September or October and that is a bit more like what people are used to, a longer song that takes people on a journey.”

Motions’ new single ‘Concrete’ will be released August 9.

The band will play a gig at Otherwise Bar on August 24 with Lost Beneath and Hidden Pillars, run by Suitable Studio.
