Townsville thieves caught on CCTV during bumbling break-in

An entrepreneur says a “comedic video” he has posted of the latest break-in of his business belies the seriousness of the crime scourge plaguing Townsville.

Kurt Sayed, owner of Townsville and Northern Beaches Trailer Hire and Townsville Ground Maintenance Services, said his businesses were hit by bungling burglars overnight Sunday.

“These poor excuses for humans obviously lack the ability and drive to actively contribute to society,” Mr Sayed said in an online post featuring a sped-up video of the break-in set to Benny Hill’s ‘Yakety Sax’.

Speaking to the Townsville Bulletin, the former physical training instructor with the Australian Air Force, said his businesses had been targeted seven times since January last year.

“I’ve been hit for anything from soft drinks and tablets through to diesel compressors, keys, safe, money: You name it.”

Businessman Kurt Sayed, a former physical training instructor with the Australian Air Force, was irate but bemused by the bumbling antics of two young men who struggled to work out how to use a bolt cutter during a burglary at Townsville and Northern Beaches Trailer Hire.

Mr Sayed said he had never spoken out about the burglaries before, “but this morning’s one absolutely infuriated me”.

He said once the thieves worked out how to use bolt cutters to access his yard, the bumbling duo failed to locate any cash on the premises and left with a couple of batteries valued at about $300 each.

The two men finally enter Townsville and Northern Beaches Trailer Hire after spending almost three minutes trying to work out how to use bolt cutters to cut through a lock and chain.

Mr Sayed said he was personally left about $1000 out of pocket from the cost of the batteries, a new lock and chain for his gate, and damage to his office.

He said the excess and impact on premiums meant it was not economically viable to make an insurance claim.

“The mental stress is just monstrous and for me, on the insurance side of things, I’m better off just paying out of my own pocket, so it hurts the finances quite a bit also,” he said.

“This time it’s around $1000 but the last time when they took the diesel compressors it was around $2000 worth of stuff.”

Two burglars hunting for cash were forced to leave with two batteries during an otherwise fruitless break-in that left the business owner about $1000 out of pocket.

Mr Sayed praised the rapid response of Townsville Police who arrived within 10 minutes of being called in the early hours of Monday morning.

Queensland Police Service have been contacted for comment.

Mr Sayed said “the grubs are just getting better and better”.

“They certainly didn’t care that alarms were going off, lights were flashing and everything, they literally didn’t care.”
