The Hobart real-estate agent and father who swerved his car in front of his ex-wife’s oncoming vehicle has learned his fate in a Hobart courtroom.

Michael Joseph Schofield – a former Edwards Windsor agent – was sentenced in Hobart Magistrates Court on Monday.

He had pleaded guilty to charges including attempt to destroy property, two counts of breach of a family violence order, common assault, obstruct the path of another driver and fail to keep to left of oncoming vehicle.

Schofield was in October 2021 served with a police order stating he must not damage any property owned by his former wife, but in April 2022 he placed a nail under the front right tyre of her car.

In June 2022, he was bailed on the condition that he comply with a family violence order.

Two months later, while the woman was driving, saw Schofield driving in her direction when he pulled the steering wheel causing two wheels of his vehicle to cross the white line.

In court, a prosecutor told Magistrate Chris Webster that Schofield’s car had not fully crossed over into the woman’s lane.

It was previously heard by barrister Fabiano Cangelosi that Schofield, a type one diabetic, had suffered a “hypoglycaemic episode” in that moment, which had caused him to swerve his vehicle, and that it had not been a purposeful act.

Submissions by Mr Cangelosi for no convictions to be recorded, and for a community-based order to be made were accepted by Mr Webster.

Mr Webster noted Schofield had not been deemed suitable to complete a family violence order because he was at a low risk.

Schofield was handed a two year good behaviour order.

No conviction was recorded.
