Hobart’s Town Hall is set to be transformed into a giant snow globe as part of a new art exhibition celebrating the city’s diversity and encouraging inclusion.

The iconic sandstone building, which dates back to 1866, will be lit up with projections of falling snow for the InvisAbility: Be Seen, By Choice event.

Designed to amplify the voices of people with disability, the free exhibition will turn the Town Hall’s famous ballroom into a kaleidoscope of sonic and visual storytelling and will feature more than 400 portraits of people who have chosen exactly how they want to be perceived.

InvisAbility is a product of Hobart City Council’s Ability to Create program and is funded through a partnership between the council, creative community organisations, Arts Tasmania, and all-ability artists.

Mentor artists Lorenz Cherry, Jude Elliot, and Cary Littleford serve as guides, helping the public to fully explore the wide range of portraits on display.

Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds described the exhibition as “such a fun and eye-opening experience” that “encourages us to appreciate the diversity within our community”.

“I’m always impressed by the creativity that’s on display at the annual Ability to Create event,” she said.

“Please come and check out the ‘snowy’ Town Hall, snap a photo or two, and then perhaps [have] dinner at one of our great city restaurants.”

The snow projections on the Town Hall can be viewed each night from 4.30pm to 6am until Saturday, July 26.

The exhibition launches on Wednesday, July 23 and can be viewed from 10am-2pm on Thursday, July 24, Friday, July 25, and Saturday, July 26.
