A Tasmanian man allegedly behind an attempt to bring in $5.5m worth of meth and cocaine into the state has faced a magistrate from custody.

Jye Mark Baldwin was brought from custody to the dock in Hobart Magistrates Court before Magistrate Chris Webster on Thursday morning.

Baldwin is charged with one count of trafficking in a controlled substance (major offence).

Police allege that after arriving at Hobart Airport on a flight from Sydney, drug detection dogs sniffed a trace of illicit drugs on Baldwin.

Australian Federal Police and Tasmania Police searched his carry-on luggage and found $2000.

They further allege that 3.5kg of meth as well as 2kg of cocaine was then found in Baldwin’s checked baggage.

Baldwin's matter was set down for a plea during his brief appearance on Thursday.

However, his lawyer asked for an adjournment without plea – citing that they had not yet received disclosure from police, and Baldwin’s health.

“I don’t have disclosure in relation to that (matter) yet, and he was actually taken into custody in relation to that matter,” the lawyer said.

“And when he went into custody, he became very unwell.”

Mr Webster adjourned the matter to a date in May.
