The mother of the young Gold Coast sailor rescued from a terrifying Southern Ocean ordeal says her son is an inspiration.
Mr Doerr’s mother Kaitlin said being reunited with her 22-year-old son after the ordeal was “glorious”.
“It was glorious, honestly, glorious just to see him” she told ABC Radio.
She flew to Adelaide from the Gold Coast see her son, who activated his emergency beacon on Friday afternoon after a collision with what he believed was a sunfish almost capsized his boat amid treacherous weather conditions off the Kangaroo Island coast.
“I knew he was here in Adelaide, he was safe, but just to see him with my own two eyes, it was the best hug.
“I’m immensely proud of him, but he never stops making me worry.
She said Mr Doerr would have her “full support” for “whatever adventure he takes”.
“This is not my first rodeo,” she said.
“He definitely challenges me and honestly he inspires me and he inspires so many other people around him. He gets out there and he’s done some pretty big things so I’d be silly not to be so proud of him.
“I fully support him and he does inspire other people and other people that look to him and look at the challenge and face it head on.
“He’s very brave but also a good person.”
On Monday, Mr Doerr posted a picture with his mother to social media after the sailor was unable to contact her until Sunday afternoon.
“Nothing like a mother’s hug to make things feel so much better,” the caption read.
Mr Doerr’s mother flew from the Gold Coast to be reunited with her son, who was unable to contact her over the weekend.
Mr Doerr expressed his gratitude to rescue crews who helped get him back on dry land.
“I’m feeling a lot better now that I’m back on land,” Mr Doerr told ABC Radio.
