A 21-year-old Adelaide woman is in a critical condition with a case of invasive meningococcal disease.

A 21-year-old Adelaide woman is in a critical condition with a case of invasive meningococcal disease.

The strain is yet to be identified.

Several people who had close contact with the patient have been identified, with six of those directed to take clearance antibiotics.

Meningococcal health information is being distributed to other contacts in accordance with the Invasive Meningococcal Disease Communicable Diseases Network Australia.

So far in 2021 there have been two cases of invasive meningococcal disease reported in SA, compared to one at the same time last year.

The first case was a strain called serogroup W and this case is yet to be identified.

There were five cases reported in 2020.
