Forecast high temperatures of 38C in South Australia’s north this week would smash winter records as the month closes out with an outback heatwave.

Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Jenny Horvat told FIVEaa radio unseasonable warmth across the north of the state could see records smashed before winter ends.

“We’re aiming for around 30 degrees at Oodnadatta today, but … we could be getting up to around 38C up around there for Friday and Saturday.”

The August maximum temperature record for Oodnadatta is 36.5C, set back in August 1946.

The warmer weather forecast comes after Adelaide and the city’s surrounds were blanketed in fog on Thursday morning.FIVEaa are reporting a plane due to land in Adelaide got turned back to Melbourne, due to the fog.

Speed limits were reduced to 80km on the South Eastern Freeway as a precaution and motorists have been advised to take extra care.Adelaide is tipped to reach a top of 19C on Thursday, but Ms Horvat said it would be warmer than normal for this time of year on Friday, with showers forecast.

“We might even get to 24C here (in Adelaide) tomorrow as well, so … a good 10-plus degrees above average for this time of year,” she said.

Showers are tipped for Friday in Adelaide before a mostly sunny Saturday with a top of 22C and showers developing on Sunday with a top of 21C tipped for the city.

Meteorologist Rohan Smyth, delivering BOM’s latest update on Wednesday, said large parts of the country would likely experience “above average” temperatures.

“We can see some of these temperatures rise up just a little bit and move further south, so the northern parts of South Australia really bearing the brunt of those warmer temperatures,” he said.
