South Australians are bracing for a day of near 40C temperatures across the state on Friday, after the temperature did not drop below 26C in the city on Thursday night.
At 4.30am it was 28.2C in Adelaide and by 6.30am it was still 27.3C, making Adelaide the hottest capital city in the country at that time – warmer than Darwin’s 24.9C. The coolest overnight temperature in the city was 26.3C at 2.45am.
Regional centres across the state are set to swelter with temperatures forecast for the high 30s in Murray Bridge with 39C, Wyalla 27C, Port Augusta 38C, Renmark 38C and 38C in Keith.
The blast of heat comes before a wet weekend with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting up to 20mm of rain for Adelaide on Saturday with a top of 29C and rain continuing in to Sunday with up to 5mm of rainfall and a max temperature of 25C.
Bureau of Meteorology Senior Meteorologist Mark Anolak said the band of rain would see the weather cool heading into next week.
“At the moment we’ve got a high pressure system that’s moving eastwards, and dragging a lot of hot air from inland parts of Australia down over parts of South Australia,” Mr Anolak said.
“This will be a relatively short-lived event, and we’ll see a band of rain move across the state on the weekend and temperatures will drop pretty quickly at the early part of next week.
“Over the next couple of days we’ll have a combination of both very warm days as well as warm nights … and it’ll probably sneak up on us a bit and be a bit uncomfortable.”
Lyla, 11 and Ella, 8, were looking forward to taking to the beach to cool off.
“We’re definitely looking forward to some boogie boarding at the beach,” the pair said. “Maybe going out for a picnic or something, but definitely some ice cream!”
Mr Anolak said to keep an eye on the CFS website for any total fire bans over the warm days.
