South Australia is “slowly slipping into those wintry patterns” with cold nights, foggy mornings and light showers in the afternoon.
The Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Simon Timcke said winter weather will be settling across the state.
“We certainly had a very dry spell in Adelaide through that February to May period but then we had that rainfall last week where we picked up 10mm which suggested the beginning of winter,” Mr Timcke told The Advertiser.
“However, for the next week or so we’re not expecting a whole lot in Adelaide … we’re just slowly slipping into those wintry patterns.
“We had quite a cold day Monday – with the maximum temperature of 13.2 degrees – it was our coldest day since July 3 of last year.”
Mr Timcke mostly warned against the chilly mornings that are to come in Adelaide.
“We certainly had some pretty cold mornings in the past few days; the conditions that lead to those mornings are clear skies and light winds … and certainly over the next week or so we do expect those conditions again,” he said.
Mr Timcke said South Australians should expect “colder mornings” to come this week.
He pointed to Wednesday night which will have the lowest temperature of 6C.
The BOM’s forecast for the week suggests a run of heavy clouds, chilly mornings and cool temperatures in the Adelaide metropolitan area.
Between Wednesday and Saturday, the highest expected temperatures will be 17C while the lowest temperature will be around 6C and 7C – there is a high chance of clouds and morning fog.
Meanwhile, Sunday will bring a bit of sunshine with the temperatures climbing to 19C.
Renmark should prepare an extra blanket as there is a forecast for cold nights for the rest of the week.
Wednesday night’s temperature will drop anywhere from 1C to 3C, while during the daytime the average forecast is 17C with little chance of rain.
Similarly, in Port Pirie, temperatures will not exceed 18C over the coming week and can drop as low as 4C on Wednesday and Friday.
It is expected to be partly cloudy with Saturday and Sunday showing possible showers.
