Warren Tredrea to launch sport news site after leaving Nine News over Covid vaccination rules

Port Adelaide legend Warren Tredrea is back in the sports media game less than a year after leaving Channel 9 over a Covid vaccination policy.

Port Adelaide great and former TV personality Warren Tredrea is back in the media game after famously falling out with Channel 9 over its vaccination policy, launching a sporting news website with journalist Dion Hayman and entrepreneur Andrew Montesi.

Promising to take sports fans “into the boardroom for behind the scenes access and analysis of contracts, negotiations, endorsements and more”, The Big Deal is a subscription-model website offering monthly and yearly access plans.

The website is Tredrea’s re-entry into the sports media space after he parted ways with Channel 9 early this year over the station’s vaccination requirements.

The four-time All-Australian who played 255 games for the Power described himself as “pro-choice” at the time, telling radio station FIVEaa: “People have the right to make their own call. That’s the same as anyone walking the streets of Adelaide, you’ve got your choice to make. It is a confidential right, absolutely”.

Both Tredrea and Hayman are staying mum on the new project, declining to comment on the launch of The Big Deal, but Montesi said he was happy to be “collaborating again with these talented and quality blokes”.

“Fans love getting in to the detail of the business of sport, and so do we,” he said.

“So we’re using super accessible platforms like Substack and podcasts to bring these interesting insights and stories directly to them.

“We’re just starting out and keeping it simple, but looking forward to building on the momentum and interest we’ve got so far.

““They (Tredrea and Hayman) are too good not to be doing anything in sport at the moment, so why not launch something ourselves?”
