More than a dozen South Australians have been caught drink driving over the Labour Day long weekend, including a man in Victor Harbor who recorded a reading more than seven times over the legal limit.

Last Friday, SAPOL asked motorists to make “sensible and unselfish” decisions in light of alarming traffic statistics surrounding the October break – but it seems their pleas went unheard.

A spokesperson said increases in traffic offences in almost every category over the long weekend had “disappointed” SAPOL.

A total of 17,625 alcotests were conducted by SAPOL as part of Operation Safe Long Weekend from Friday to Monday, returning 42 positive results.

Nearly 800 drug tests were also administered and 15 drivers returned a positive reading.

In total, 819 speeding offences were detected, almost double that of the June long weekend.

One man lost his life on the road over the October long weekend, and six others sustained serious injuries in other accidents.
