VAILO Adelaide 500 road closures and traffic restrictions start

Brace for traffic snarls for the next fortnight as Adelaide 500 traffic restrictions start. See the full list of closures and what you can do to beat them.

Peak hour commuter chaos is guaranteed to grip the city for the next fortnight as traffic restrictions for the VAILO Adelaide 500 start.

A suite of restrictions on major arterial roads into the CBD, including Wakefield, Bartels and Fullarton roads, Dequetteville Terrace and Hutt Street, kicked in on Friday morning

As is customary, commuters were caught on the hop and faced delays.

The majority of road closures will be in place until Tuesday, November 28.

The state’s peak motoring body, the RAA, has advised motorists to plan ahead as surrounding roads such as Payneham, Magill, Kensington and Greenhill roads will experience delays.

“If you need to drive to work or get into the city, our advice is to leave earlier and allow an extra 20 minutes for your journey,” RAA senior manager of safety and infrastructure Charles Mountain said.

“Nearby roads such as Greenhill Road, Kensington Road, North Terrace, Portrush Road and even Glynburn Road will be slower and more congested.

“We don’t want to see motorists get caught out or discourage them for heading into the city – it’s about being prepared and planning accordingly.

“Being stuck in traffic can be frustrating but we want everyone to exercise patience and look after all road users so everyone can get home safely.”

Mr Mountain also suggested commuters in the eastern suburbs to consider public transport, cycling, walking or working from home.
