The VAILO Adelaide 500 is just nine days away from roaring across the streets of Adelaide, and this year’s event will feature a new generation of cars as well as a new generation of jets flying overhead.
The state government announced on Tuesday that for the first time, the Adelaide 500 will have flyovers from the RAAF’s F-35A Lightning II – the ADF’s fifth-generation stealth fighter.
The flyovers will occur half an hour before the Supercar races on Saturday and Sunday, which are set to decide the outcome of the Repco Supercars Championship.
Also announced was free public transport for all Adelaide 500 ticket holders on all Adelaide Metro bus, train and tram services over the four day race.
Premier Peter Malinauskas along with Championship leader Brodie Kostecki, who has a narrow lead over rival Shane van Gisbergen going into the Championship’s final round, announced the new flyovers ahead of the event.
“The Adelaide 500 is the elite domestic motorsport event in the country,” Mr Malinauskas said.
“Year on year thousands of fans come from all parts of the country to celebrate this event and it’s going to be one extraordinary show.
“We’ve always had the benefit of the air force being on show at the Adelaide 500, but this year for the first time we are going to have the F-35’s flying over Adelaide.
“I can’t remember on any occasion having an F-35 on display over the skies of our city, but next weekend that will be occurring over the Adelaide 500 which will be a great addition and a new thing for the event.”
The Premier said ticket sales for the event were up 6 per cent over last year.
Mr Kostecki said Adelaide was “one of his favourite events growing up.”
“It used to be the season opener, now it’s come back and it’s better than ever, it’s the season finale, so I’m really excited to be here,” he said.
Those attending next week’s race will be able to use a free VAILO Adelaide 500 shuttle with a CBD route of over 17 stops to key gates around the event, looping to the Adelaide Railway station.
The shuttle will operate from approximately 8.30am to 7pm on Thursday and 8am to midnight on Friday and over the weekend.
There will also be additional bus, train and tram services including O-Bahn services operating across the event, including post the After Race Concerts.
