Concept designs have been tweaked following community feedback and a technical analysis, giving the green light for works to start on the Southern Expressway Interchange at Majors Rd.

The altered designs have widened Majors Rd from the Southern Expressway to Londsdale Hwy and Ocean Blvd, providing two lanes of traffic in both directions.

On and off ramps have been shortened by about 100m to minimise the impact on land and vegetation.

A realignment of the Patrick Jonker Veloway has been incorporated to the east of the new on and off ramp under Majors Rd to improve sightlines.

Short-term road closures will be placed on Majors Rd and speed restrictions on the Southern Expressway, for works to be completed safely.

The state and commonwealth government have each contributed $60 million towards the $120 million project.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development Catherine King said the “significant investment” provides “crucial access” to the Southern Expressway for commuters in southern Adelaide.

Premier Peter Malinauskas added: “Majors Rd is an integral part of our road network in Adelaide’s south and we’re happy to see works begin on an upgrade that will improve the experience for everyone using the road.”

The updated concept designs also include tree planting for the shared path on Majors Rd which will provide 50 per cent coverage when fully grown.

SA Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Tom Koutsantonis said the project has had minimal impact on Glenthorne National Park and Glenthorne Farm.

“In fact, the Friends of Glenthorne have been vocal supporters of our approach – which includes establishing a new nursery and garden area located in the Riding for the Disabled Association’s Majors Rd premises,” Mr Koutsantonis said.

“The integration of shared use paths and improvements to the Patrick Jonker Veloway will enhance the area for cyclists and pedestrians.

The project is expected to finish at the end of 2025, with the capacity to carry about 74,000 cars per day between Darlington and the Reynella Interchange.
