Concept designs have been released showing plans for a new interchange at Majors Rd on the Southern Expressway, with the community now invited to submit feedback.
The proposed design includes on and off ramps to the expressway for both directions of travel, which are confined almost entirely to the existing road corridor.
It also shows widening of the Majors Rd bridge to accommodate six lanes, including two through-lanes and a dedicated right-turn lane on to the expressway in each direction.
Funding for the $120m project, to be split on a 50:50 basis between the state and commonwealth governments, was confirmed in last week’s federal budget.
Transport and Infrastructure Minister Tom Koutsantonis said a first round of community engagement helped inform the concept design, with about 65 per cent of respondents indicating they felt positive about the project.
“The department also received significant feedback about minimising impacts to Glenthorne National Park – Ityamaiitpinna Yarta and the existing mountain bike trails in the area,” he said.
“This was a key consideration in the development of the concept design, and will remain a priority as the project moves forward.”
The opposition called on the government to release modelling that justifies the project.
“A leaked feasibility study from 2020 shows this project simply doesn’t stack up so unless the government has some new advice then this is simply a waste of $120m,” Opposition Leader David Speirs said.
Feedback on the design will be open until December 2 at www.dit.sa.gov.au/majorsinterchange
