The truck driver charged over the death of a pedestrian at Melrose Park says the crash was a horrible accident.

Removalist Jagmeet Singh, 31, was driving on South Rd with his wife around 9pm when the truck struck a 64 year old local man. He died at the scene.

“A man just in front of the truck on the right side, I was driving and I don’t know what happened, it was a blink of my eye,” he told 7NEWS.

Mr Singh, of Clearview, was not injured in the incident and attempted to help the victim before paramedics arrived.

“It was a horrible scene, I got out of the truck and looked at the man, he was not looking good,” he said.

South Rd was closed to all traffic between Furness Ave and Regent St for several hours, but reopened on Monday morning.

Shortly after, family of the accident victim visited the scene.

It is understood the victim returned to Adelaide from China to visit loved ones and his daughter said he always followed road rules.

Major Crash officers have since arrested and charged Mr Singh with causing death by dangerous driving and aggravated driving without due care.

He has been bailed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court in May.

“I didn’t do it intentionally, there was no intentions to hit that person,” Mr Singh said.

“I can’t sleep, the scene is coming again and again in front of me and my wife.

“I would just say sorry and what happened was not my fault, I was not aware, I am not a murderer.”

The pedestrian’s death is the 16th life lost on South Australian roads this year compared to 4 at the same time last year.

Police will continue to investigate the incident.
