A pedestrian has died after being struck by a truck at Melrose Park on Sunday night.

Emergency services were called to South Rd, near Castle Plaza, just after 9pm, but the local 64-year-old man died at the scene.

The truck driver, a 31-year-old man from Clearview, was not physically injured.

South Rd was closed to all traffic between Furness Ave and Regent St for several hours, but has since reopened.

Major Crash officers are investigating the incident and are appealing to witnesses or motorists with dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers.

The man’s death is the 16th life lost on South Australian roads this year compared to four at the same time last year.

It’s been the second deadliest start to a year on SA’s roads in a decade.

Last week, two drivers, one the nephew of a former SA senator, were killed in separate incidents.

Police Assistant Commissioner Ian Parrott said the number of lives lost was “completely unacceptable”.

“There’s been a life lost on South Australia roads on less than every third day of this year,” he said.
