A man has died after his truck crashed down an embankment and flipped on to rocks on Kangaroo Island.
Just after 8am, police received reports the truck had left Christmas Street near Penneshaw and crashed down an embankment leading to the ocean.
The driver and sole occupant, a 27-year-old man from Kangaroo Island, died at the scene.
Emergency services crews had difficulty accessing the vehicle, which came to rest on rocks adjacent to the road by the sea.
Its trailer has ended up in the ocean.
Major Crash investigators are at the scene.
The Advertiser understands the truck was being used to carry grapes from a winery on the island.
False Cape Winess, which is based on the Dudley Peninsula, paid tribute in a post to their Facebook page.
“We are saddened by the tragic accident this morning. Our hearts go out to family and friends. The cellar door will be closed today,” it said.
The accident, near Christmas Cove Marina, resulted in a number of 2m cubed crates from the semi-trailer landing in the water.
The Transport Department warned mariners to “navigate with caution in this area and report any navigation danger or floating objects”.
It is monitoring the situation while assisting SA Police and the Country Fire Service.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or saw the truck travelling in the area is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The man’s death is the 22nd life lost on South Australian roads compared to 33 at the same time last year.
