● Travis Boak: finals hope or not, we’ll be going hard
THIS is an idea that will have everyone panting. Get your dad, grandad, or anyone really, undie cover for Father’s Day and help children with cancer.
Travis Boak’s underwear range, Rogers, was named for his father, who died of cancer at just 48. Boak is a proud ambassador for the Childhood Cancer Association, so it’s hardly surprising that he’s put his jocks into service for a cause close to his heart.
So from now until Father’s Day, Boak is sending 100 per cent of profits from all Rogers gear sold to the CCA, to raise $10,000 for a playgroup for kids with cancer.
Chief executive of the CCA, Cath O’Loughlin, explained that cancer treatment leaves children with such compromised immune systems that they can’t mix with other kids in mainstream settings. The special group provides a safe environment for these children and their families.
“It’s exclusive to children with oncology and their siblings so nobody goes there with a cold or if they are feeling unwell,” she said.
The money raised would run the playgroup for a year, providing specialist supervision and safe programs, she said.
Chris Hartley, chair of the Childhood Cancer Association, said he wished they had had such a group for his son, Thomas, diagnosed with a brain tumour at six months.
“He would have benefited from the social interaction and the language skills that playgroup gives,” Mr Hartley said.
Ben Mead, vice chair of the Childhood Cancer Association, said parents would also benefit from a group where they could relax and meet other families going through the same experience. After his daughter Holly was diagnosed with cancer, he said his family were indebted to the CCA for their support.
“The CCA gets no government funding, so every dollar raised supports these children and their families,” he said.
Mix 102.3’s breakfast team, Jodie and “Soda”, champions for the cause, say everyone should go to mix1023.com.au and #GetIntoBoakysPants for Father’s Day. You can order the gear online.
“Your Dad gets to enjoy the best undies you can get and we get to raise money for charity. Everyone is covered,” Boak said.
