Thunderstorms, rain and heatwaves forecast for South Australian weather this week

South Australia’s strange summer will continue this week with a mix of thunderstorms, extreme heat and some rain on the way.

South Australia is finally enjoying some summer sunshine but things might take a nasty turn this week with parts of the state forecast to endure thunderstorms and heatwaves.

Adelaide experienced a burst of heat over the weekend, which the Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting to continue on Monday and Tuesday with tops of 34C.

But elsewhere in the state there is a chance of rain in the west, north, and east, which will eventually be pushed into the Adelaide metropolitan area, according to the BOM.

Senior meteorologist Hannah Colhoun said the chance of thunder and heavy rainfall will come down to Adelaide by late morning on Tuesday.

“We’ve got a broad area of low-pressure trough throughout the north and west on Monday,” she told The Advertiser.

“We’re expecting thunderstorm activity about western, northern, and eastern parts of South Australia and then on Tuesday to move further to the east, to Adelaide.”

“The rainfall across the state will be quite variable depending on where those thunderstorms do form.”

But on Monday, the Adelaide CBD temperature will climb to a top of 34C and enjoy gentle south-easterly breezes between 15-25km/h in the early afternoon to late evening.

The turn in weather on Tuesday will be felt through the rain but temperatures will remain stable at a high 34C.

Northern parts of SA will be feeling the scorching heat, with the BOM issuing a heatwave summary for Monday and Tuesday.

The North West Pastoral region has been issued a severe heat warning, with the mercury to climb into the low-40Cs in parts.

Other parts which have been told of a low-intensity heatwave include the Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Flinders, Mid North, North East Pastoral, Riverland and the West Coast region.

The State Emergency Service reminded people to keep safe around trees as the hot weather conditions sometimes make branches drop. Parents should avoid letting their children climb or play under any large branches.

Residents of heatwave areas should try to keep indoors if possible especially older people, sick people, children, babies, and pregnant women.

If possible, the airconditioners and fans should also be used.
