South Australia Police have released CCTV images showing two men suspected of committing a gay hate crime in Rundle Mall earlier this month, after a young couple was attacked while holding hands.

The couple, aged in their 20s, said they were walking on November 10, when they were approached by two males, with one pulling a balaclava over his face before the alleged attack.

This week, the victims spoke to 7 News Adelaide anonymously after one of them was hospitalised with a broken jaw, alleging that the men set upon them because they were homosexual.

“This is horrible and the pain is 10/10 … I’m afraid to go down the street because someone will hit me again,” the victim told 7News Adelaide.

“At first they started yelling out homesexual harassment.

“They just repeatedly punched us in the face … they broke my partner’s jaw twice, and I also sustained bruising to the face and legs.”

According to one of the victims, the “traumatising” attack was thwarted by a local shop owner who ran to their aid, however, they said onlookers watched the assault and did not intervene.

“It’s been traumatising for both of us,” they said.

“People like that shouldn’t be out there you know, living a free life when we’re stuck inside, can’t work, can’t talk, can’t eat.”

Police have released CCTV images as part of an investigation into an assault in an effort to locate the suspects.

The alleged assault occurred at 8.30pm on Sunday 10 November.

Police have alleged one of the suspects pulled on a balaclava and punched and kicked the victims.

They also allege that a second suspect then ran up and punched one of the victims, breaking his jaw.

Meanwhile, it is alleged that the third male did not take part in the assault.

Police allege that the assault was stopped after a member of the public ran to the victim’s aid, and that the suspects ran off, east came to their aid and the suspects ran off, east along Rundle Mall, then north down a side street.

A search was conducted in the area but did not locate the suspects. Investigations are continuing.
