Suspicious house fire in Davoren Park leaves family depressed and homeless

Adelaide man Ken Roberts and his family have been left homeless and in a state of panic after their home was targeted in an overnight arson attack.

Davoren Park house fire

A northern suburbs family has been left homeless and in despair after arsonists set fire to their rental.

Ken Roberts heard banging noises near his fence at the Curnow St home about 11pm Monday.

“I decided not to go out because I didn’t know how many people were out there,” Mr Roberts said.

“It sounded like someone walking along and banging on the fence … but it looks like axe holes in the fence.”

Two hours later the noise returned and Mr Roberts was alerted to the fire in his carport, so he quickly roused his partner, step children and another roommate.

“We tried to put it out but someone busted the hot water service pipe so we couldn’t get any water pressure,” he said.

The fire was contained but the loungeroom and kitchen was severely damaged and the home is unliveable. The damage bill was estimated at $150,000.

The fire is believed to have been deliberately lit in the carport, before spreading to the home’s roof space.

All occupants escaped without injury.

Now homeless, Mr Roberts said he felt depressed.

“We’re just stuck in limbo now, we can’t even go to a caravan park because of the dog,” he said.

“My main concern now is trying to find a place to sleep at night.”

Meanwhile, an alleged drink driver was involved in a fiery crash in nearby Paralowie overnight.

The Toyota Sedan the man was driving crashed into a parked car on Burton Rd about 10pm Monday before it caught fire.

The driver, a Largs Bay man, 29 was not injured, but he refused to provide his details or provide a roadside breath test.

He was arrested and charged with due care, driving under the influence and refusing a breath analysis.

He was bailed to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court next month.
