A stunning aerial image of Burnside Village’s new glass roof has revealed the shopping centre’s expansion has reached a new milestone.
The final installation of 609 glass panels of the Lanik roof – part of stage six in the construction process – was completed on Saturday.
Lanik is a Spanish-based construction company that specialises in sweeping glass structures and retractable roofs with projects around the world.
The centre’s management thanked the project team in a social media post.
“Extra appreciation to Hansen Yuncken for capturing this immaculate aerial photo,” they said.
Work started in May last year after years of delays following Covid
The expansion will double the centre’s footprint to nearly 39,000sq m, including 80 new stores with three levels of additional retail space, new premium mall, new dining area and 560 free undercover parks and 24-hour “gym and lifestyle facility”.
Owners Cohen Group have previously said it would be the largest private sector retail property expansion in SA.
In April, it was revealed Spanish retail giant Zara had signed a 20-year lease with the up-market shopping centre.
It’s been at the centre for nearly 13 years but its Burnside store closed in June for a “multimillion-dollar, tier-one couture fit-out” and an enlarged Zara outlet is scheduled to re-open in mid-October.
