South Australia weather: Adelaide to climb to 35C in mid April and 40C in Far North

DON’T put away the fans just yet, Adelaide. Temperatures are heating up over the next week, with the mercury set to climb to 35C in the city and rising to a sizzling 40C in the state’s Far North.

Weather explained: Will the dry start to 2018 continue for Autumn?

DON’T put away the summer fans just yet, Adelaide.

By mid next week, temperatures in the city are set to climb to 35C, while the mercury will rise to a sizzling 40C in the state’s far north.

While the weather forecast seems a bit warm for this time of year, Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Hilary Wilson said the expected temperatures were “not particularly unusual, especially for the first half of April”.

But, to put the forecast in perspective, April’s average maximum is just 22.7C.

“It’s not uncommon to see temperatures get up to the low-to-mid 30s,” Ms Wilson said, adding the state has recorded an “unusually hot and dry” start to the year.

“The record is 36.9C (for April) which happened last back in 2005.”

For Adelaide, the occurrence of 35C temperatures at this time of year happen about once every decade.

The city will steadily climb into the mid 30s from now until Wednesday next week.

“It’s less common to get a few days (of warm weather) in a row (but) it’s certainly something we’ve seen in the past,” Ms Wilson said.

The warm weather is the result of a “persistent ridge of high pressure from the South” that is stopping temperatures from dropping and warm air from inland is being pushed over Adelaide.

So far this year, the city’s rainfall is well below average.

So far this year, Adelaide has recorded just 14.2mm of rain.

The average rainfall to the end of April is 108.9mm.

“We do have quite a long way to go if we were to get up to our average rainfall amount (which) seems pretty unlikely at this point,” Ms Wilson said.
