A deluge of rain has hit SA, with areas east of Adelaide reporting falls of 40mm – after what has been a historically dry start to the year.
The BOM’s senior meteorologist Angus Hines revealed Friday was the wettest day on record for the past five months – with the eastern part of the state catching most of the rain.
“It’s been a long stretch of dry weather across much of South Australia, including around Adelaide which goes back to the start of the year,” Mr Hines told The Advertiser.
“The heaviest rainfall around that broader Adelaide area was out in the east … spots like Lenswood had just shy of 40mm of rain over the past two days and Ashwood collected about 35mm.
“On Friday, Adelaide itself didn’t have quite as much rain but still a decent drop with 25mm.”
However, Mr Hines said this spate of rain is unlikely to continue into the next few days.
“In the short term, we are not expecting the rain to continue,” he said.
“There’s a few possible showers possible today but across Adelaide it is likely to be only another 1mm or 2mm of rainfall.
“Then we will be heading back into another few dry days until maybe the middle of next week – that is the earliest promising prospect for some more rainfall.”
But the downpour seen on Friday is still not enough to compensate for the SA’s dry few months, according to Mr Hines.
“Unfortunately, it has not been enough rainfall to catch back up to bridge the deficit that we’ve experienced so far this year – but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.”
Meanwhile, Adelaide weather will remain on the cooler side with Saturday’s top temperature expected to be 15C before dropping to 6C overnight.
On Sunday, the weather forecast is quite clear with light winds as temperatures climb to 17C.
