‘Sickest person in Adelaide’: Hayley Beadman ends up in an induced coma hours after contracting Covid in Bali

A relaxing getaway to Bali has turned to tragedy with 24-year-old Aldinga woman Hayley Beadman set to have her foot amputated after contracting Covid.

A 24-year-old woman – described by one of her nurses as the “sickest person in Adelaide” when she arrived at emergency – will have her foot amputated after catching Covid in Bali.

On November 24, the day after landing home after a week-long holiday, Hayley Beadman went into cardiac arrest and was placed into an induced coma.

Her partner of five years, Ben Moore, called an ambulance to their Aldinga home when she started to have chest pain.

The 24-year-old was rushed to the Flinders Medical Centre.

“In emergency, her heart stopped, she went into cardiac arrest,” Mr Moore said.

“They (hospital staff) worked on her for 50 minutes to get her heart started again.”

Once staff revived Hayley, they brought her into surgery and placed her on an ECMO machine.

“Her heart was really inflamed at that point, it wasn’t contracting at all,” he said.

Hayley was placed on “a dialysis machine, lung machine and the ECMO machine”.

A nurse told Mr Moore that Hayley was “the sickest person in Adelaide”.

Thanks to the efforts of the Flinders Medical Centre staff, Hayley’s life was saved.

But she’s been in an induced coma since.

Doctors told Mr Moore that Hayley had developed myocarditis, a condition which causes the heart to inflame, after she contracted Covid while in Bali.

“We didn’t know we had Covid because we didn’t have any symptoms,” he said.

Mr Moore and Hayley’s family have been left traumatised by the experience.

“We’re just ready for her to wake up,” he said.

“I miss her a lot to say the least.

“I’ve got the dog and the cat here to keep me company but I’d much rather Hayley be here as well.”

Mr Moore had been decorating their bedroom to surprise Hayley for when she gets back home.

The lifesaving medication she has been taking to save her vital organs means Hayley will likely lose her right foot in an amputation.

The medication Hayley is taking closes small blood veins around the body to ensure blood flow to the vital organs. Unfortunately this means there is no way for blood to travel to her feet.

Doctor say her both feet aren’t looking good but the right foot will likely be lost.

“It was all quite scary,” Mr Moore said. “It was all horrible.”

Doctors are looking to try and ease Hayley out of the coma in the next few days.

“She will be present in the moment but won’t remember anything,” Mr Moore said.

“It’s going to be a long process.”

“I really want to stress how incredible the Flinders Medical Team have been caring for Hayley,” he added.

A friend and colleague at Petbarn Seaford, Moni Burrell, organised a GoFundMe to support Hayley and her family.

Ms Burrell said Hayley was “extremely warm”.

“She is one in a million and I don’t think she realises how beautiful and rare she is,” she wrote on GoFundMe.

“We all know she is a very strong woman and still has a lot of living to do.”

Ms Burrell has also organised a raffle to raise more funds to support Hayley.
