A beloved great grandmother and volunteer has been farewelled by family and friends at a funeral held at Playford Uniting Church this week, with many remembering her caring attitude, laugh and love for Elvis.

Marjorie Morritt died on her 79th birthday after she was tragically struck by a car at Elizabeth East earlier this month.

She was rushed to the Lyell McEwin Hospital, where she volunteers, but died shortly after.

At her funeral on Friday, many gathered to celebrate Ms Morritt’s life.

Son Peter Morritt said his mother, who was born in Victoria, “loved her family”.

“She loved Elvis and potentially inappropriate jokes,” he said.

“Her growth and strength was not only from her blood family but from you and those not with us today.”

Ms Morritt’s granddaughter, who also spoke at the funeral, said her grandmother would spoil her and her brother as kids.

“She would spoil us absolutely rotten,” she said.

“We would get (to her house) and make trips down to cash converters or radio rentals, where grandma would get us the next Nintendo.

“Grandma loved to play PlayStation and Nintendo with us.

“Whenever we hung out with grandma, she would tell us the funniest jokes. She had this snort of laughter that would make us laugh harder every time. She’d laugh so hard she’d start crying.”

Felicity Rouse from Playford Uniting Church said Ms Morritt was an inspiration to her daughter and “an invaluable part of our Playford Church Community”.

Ms Morritt earlier was awarded a Premier’s certificate by Peter Malinauskas for her ‘outstanding volunteer service’ to the community.

Ms Morritt was killed on her birthday but Ms Rouse said they had “the wonderful privilege of celebrating her birthday the day before she left us” at a 50s diner Tanunda.

“She enjoyed a hotdog with mac and cheese on top and a photo with Elvis. I think that was probably her last meal”.

Ms Rouse said she made people feel welcomed and cared for others.

“She held no judgement to others and spoke to anyone, young or old. She made friends so easily and so much of this was because she went out of her way to have a chat, share a joke and invite someone to stay for coffee,” she said.

“Wherever she went, she noticed and cared for others”.
