The family of promising carpenter and “selfless” family man Sam Williams, who went for a motorcycle ride on Australia Day but never returned home, have told of their grief.

Sam, 22, of Globe Derby Park, took his Honda motorcycle for a solo ride in the afternoon of the public holiday to Port Pirie, where he fatally crashed into a fence on The Terrace about 6.30pm.

Before the crash, Sam was enjoying a pub meal at The Birkenhead Tavern at Birkenhead with his brother, Jack, 24, and father Rowland after which they spent a few hours at the beach.

Mr Williams, 65, also of Globe Derby Park, said it felt like a piece of him was now missing.

He described Sam as a passionate and talented carpenter, who left school at 15 to pursue his dreams.

“Sam was a very dedicated young man to his desire to become a carpenter,” Mr Williams said.

“He was hardly ever sick, he was always on time for work.”

Mr Williams said that his favourite trait about his son, a keen fisherman and football player, was “his dedication to helping others”.

“He would be the first one out of all the kids to get up and start doing the dishes or tidying up,” he said.

“It never changed; he was always there being helpful.”

Sam is survived by Jack and a sister, Monique, 26, who Mr Williams said were distraught.

Mr Williams’ partner, Monica Magann, 56, who lives in the Prospect area, recalled when Sam refused to take payment for completing work on her home.

“He was working on my house and I said ‘I’ll give you some money’ and he said ‘nope’,” she said.

“I bought him some Krispy Kremes and some T-shirts and then gave him $100, and he said ‘No, I can’t take it’.”

Ms Magann also contributed to a fundraising page set-up by Mr Williams’ workmate of 12 years, Jeremy Walters, 42, of Aberfoyle Park.

“One of his biggest joys in life was hanging out with his beloved Dad, sharing a beer together, doing little improvement projects, camping and fishing (he had more luck than his Dad), and helping out on the block,” Ms Magann wrote.

“He was just coming in to his own, finding his voice, talking to people more and trusting himself to share his feelings, when this tragedy took him.”

Mr Walters said he organised the fundraiser, which has received nearly $3000 of its $8000 goal in less than 24 hours, as it was “just one little way of giving back” to his long-term friend.

“It was something that I thought I could do that may help him and his family to take their minds away from, I guess, financial pressure,” Mr Walters said.

“When I heard the news, I sat down and scratched my head and contemplated for a long while how I can help and what we can do to help.”

Mr Walters became emotional when he reflected on the support the fundraiser had received so far.

“Im quite overwhelmed by the sheer love, the generosity, the heartfelt pledges and pleas even from somewhat random strangers … it’s blown me away,” he said.

A GoFundMe page has been launched to support the family.
