A 49-year-old Salisbury East man has been arrested after allegedly removing a baby boy — not known to him — from his pusher while on-board a bus travelling through Adelaide’s north on Friday.
The incident occurred just after 8.40am while the bus was on Bridge Road, Salisbury East.
According to 7NEWS, the man was shirtless and allegedly pretended to breastfeed the one-year-old infant. He also allegedly did not have a valid ticket.
Police said the mother took back her son uninjured.
She then went to alert the driver, who responded quickly and sought help from the bus depot.
“A fare evader got on the bus and he went to grab the lady’s baby out of her pram … she’s come up to me and said ‘you’ve got to get this guy off the bus, he’s not good, he’s tried to grab my baby out the pram’ and breastfeed her baby,” he relayed, according to the audio obtained by 7NEWS. “Not too sure what to do here.”
The bus pulled over shortly after but by the time police arrived, the suspect was gone.
Police searched the area and were initially unable to find him. But after investigating, they arrested the 49-year-old man, who has now been charged with aggravated assault and disorderly behaviour. He has also been banned from all public transport for three months.
The man was refused police bail and will appear at the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on August 5.
