A man has been arrested after allegedly selling pills to teenagers labelled Xanax that were “laced” with a variety of substances leaving those who ingested them in hospital.
The 18-year-old male allegedly supplied the toxic drugs to two males and a female who required urgent medical treatment after ingesting them.
Police raided an Elizabeth Vale home on Tuesday in a bid to identify the source of the drugs, and seized more than 1400 “Xanax” tablets.
Some of these tablets were packaged in small bags, indicating they were ready for supply, according to police.
The tablets marked Xanax were fake and contained a variety of illicit substances.
“This poses a significant risk to the community who would be unaware of what they are consuming,” a police spokesperson said.
“Police wish to remind the public that taking any medication which hasn’t been prescribed to you by a doctor can be dangerous and even life threatening.”
The alleged supplier, from Elizabeth Vale, was arrested and charged with supplying a controlled drug to a child and trafficking a large commercial quantity of a controlled drug. He will appear in court today.
It comes after revelations crime gangs are flooding Victoria with black market imported Xanax.
A Herald Sun investigation found the highly addictive benzodiazepine drug is being trafficked in Melbourne on social media channels for $10 a tablet.
