SA land supply dashboard to give people detailed information about land availability, housing supply

An Australian-first interactive planning tool is being launched today to give South Aussies detailed information about land availability and enable them to track development applications.

Labor’s housing crisis is ‘out of control’

A new land supply “dashboard”will grant the public access to detailed information about land availability, housing supply and urban development patterns across Greater Adelaide.

The dashboard, which launches Monday, incorporates existing land supply data and the latest land division and development application data.

It aims is to give a greater understanding of community, consumer and industry needs – ultimately contributing to greater transparency as well as improved housing supply and affordability.

The dashboard, which delivers on a Labor election commitment, is the only interactive visual platform of its type in the country.

It will mean the public can track development applications and activity across Adelaide.

The live and interactive tool displays current information on the availability of infrastructure such as water, sewer, and electricity to development ready lots, as well as latest information on code amendments.

By the end of this year, the tool will be expanded to include more detailed development activity data across all towns and cities in South Australia.

It will also include other land supply types, such as more residential and employment land activities.

Planning Minister Nick Champion said the dashboard provided timely and transparent data on urban land supply and development activity in the Adelaide area.

“By monitoring and analysing urban development patterns and activity, the South Australian government will be better equipped to identify areas of high demand and

develop strategies to meet those needs,” he said.

“We promised to deliver a tool which would provide accurate, real-time information regarding the state of land supply across South Australia.

“This will contribute to a more sustainable and balanced housing market across the state.”

The Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) had called for the development of the dashboard.

UDIA SA chief executive Liam Golding said “in the current housing affordability crisis we need every tool available to respond to demand in the market”.

“The path out of our housing affordability crisis is supply,” he said.

“The land supply dashboard will be used by industry and government to deeply interrogate where there are constraints on development and the actions we can take, like delivering infrastructure, so we can up supply and build more houses.”

The dashboard can be found at plan.sa.gov.au/state_snapshot/land_supply

The state government last year announced the single largest release of residential land in the state’s history – set to deliver 25,000 extra homes – but concerns have been raised over the provision of services and utilities, including trunk water infrastructure.

The Advertiser reported this month that a debt-funded state budget raid of hundreds of millions dollars is being considered to fund water and sewerage to the new homes, which have been announced as a measure to help ease the housing crisis.
