POLICE IN PLEA TO ROAD USERS IN THE HILLS
Following an alarming amount of motorists found breaking the law in the Adelaide Hills last weekend, police are pleading to road users to be responsible.
The third phase of Operation Safe Hills began on February 1 and will run until the end of April.
In the past weekend, 71 motorists were caught committing offences, including 59 drivers, and two people caught driving 30km/h over the speed limit. More than 10 motorcyclists were caught committing offences.
Across the safety operation that began in October, 1986 vehicles were caught breaking the law in the Hills, with 1631 being cars, and 355 being motorcycles. A total of 24 cars and 30 motorcycles were detected travelling more than 30km/h over the speed limit. An additional 13 cars and 27 motorcycles were detected travelling 40km/h over the limit.
Superintendent Bob Gray, from the Traffic Services Branch, said drivers and riders who choose to ignore speed limits are knowingly risking their own lives, and the lives of road users.
“The potential consequences of these choices are clear to every person,” Superintendent Gray said.
“If you choose to drive or ride dangerously you are risking catastrophic impacts on your life, on your family’s life, on your community and on emergency services personnel.
“Holding a licence to drive a car or ride a motorcycle is a privilege that brings with it a responsibility to adhere to the road rules that are in place for everyone’s safety … there are no exceptions.”
