SA business, Heidelberg Cakes, rescued by major local bakery after falling into liquidation

A mystery SA bakery has stepped in to save a popular cake making business from liquidation.

Bride to be SHOCKED at wedding cake cutting cost

A South Australian cake making business – which specialises in wedding cakes – has been saved from collapse by a white knight and will continue trading.

Heidelberg Cakes in Stepney abruptly fell into liquidation on Wednesday, leaving 15 staff unemployed and hundreds of brides in limbo, with up to 200 wedding cake orders still outstanding.

But a “major local SA bakery” has stepped in to ensure the beloved shop can continue trading on Monday.

Executive chef James Schmidt, who previously ran the business for 30 years before its sale in 2021, said everyone was in tears after the good news was announced.

“We’d like to reassure people we are not shutting down, we’re back into it. It’s very exciting,” Mr Schmidt told the Advertiser.

“He’s very happy to keep us going the way we’re going and keep supplying beautiful custom cakes to Adelaide”.

The business also confirmed the news on their Facebook account this afternoon.

“MIRACLES HAPPEN! We have just been informed that a major local South Australian business has rescued Heidelberg Cakes! Stay tuned as there is a lot of work to do and customers to contact!” the business wrote.

Despite reeling from the shock of being out of jobs, Mr Schmidt and four other staff members had refused to jilt their customers and were determined to go unpaid to complete wedding cake orders this weekend.
