Revealed: South Australia’s most expensive number plates are on auction now

SA’s movers and shakers are dropping a fortune on numerical number plates in an auction happening now – with the number “1” plate asking for a cool seven figures.

Forget bitcoin and property investments, number plates have experienced a steady and meteoric rise in value for some time and you can get your hands on the most valuable one.

Historic Plates, a number plate auction service, has listed South Australia’s most valued plates for auction and they’re asking for a cool $1m.

With two online auctions set to end in December, the Grand Prix Plate Auction will feature the highly-sought after ‘1’ GP plate.

The ‘1’ plate is reserved for just under $1m making it the most valuable plates to ever be offered in South Australia.

It’s one of just 199 black Grand Prix plates issued in the state.

Equivalent plates in NSW and Vic sell anywhere between $4m to $6m.

Historic Plates will also list the ‘111’ plate for auction.

It is the first time this set of plates will be publicly for sale since they were issued directly to the current owner in 1985.

Currently, ‘49’ has already has a bid at $189,888 and is expected to sell for $240,000 to $260,000.

Historic Plates previously sold similar plates such as ‘25’ for $436,000 in December 2021, plate ‘65’ for $395,000 in April 2022, plate ‘93’ for $260,000 in June 2022 and plate ‘46’ for $270,000 in October 2022.

The Grand Prix plate auction ends at 7pm Monday December 12 and the Historic Plate Auction ends at 7pm Tuesday December 13 2022.
