A controversial new basketball stadium in Marion will cost more than $30m, as the local council releases the first images of what it will look like.
The first artist impressions – created by Studio Nine Architects – endorsed and proposed by Marion Council were released to the public on Monday as public consultation for the ambitious stadium begins.
The “much-needed” project has received $6m from the federal government.
If approved, construction will begin in 2026, with a “budget of $30m-plus”.
The Marion Sports Precinct is on Norfolk Rd, which would also be upgraded with a $3m revamp, council documents show, including improved pedestrian crossing, new street trees and rain garden.
The precinct was previously home to at least 12 sports organisations including the 90-year-old Marion Tennis Club.
The club was left devastated after the council announced it would demolish its leased home grounds to develop the stadium, but it found a new home in November last year.
The site was earlier earmarked for a $20m ice arena but the project was scrapped as a result of increased construction costs.
Marion Tennis Club president Kym Morgan previously said in a bid to keep the club alive, membership had nearly doubled.
The new four-court stadium will be the new home for the South Adelaide Basketball Club, which has been lobbying for a new facility to cater to its more-than 2000 members.
The existing Marion Basketball Stadium is more than 60 years old and no longer meets the functional requirements of the sport.
Marion Mayor Kris Hanna said the council was looking forward to hearing from the community.
“We are excited to reveal the concept design for a proposed Marion Basketball Stadium which would replace the old facility at Norfolk Road,” Mr Hanna said.
