Police helicopter helps return car to owner after delivery driver in CBD carjacking

Police tracked a vehicle from the air for several kilometres across Adelaide after a delivery driver had his ute stolen in the CBD.

A police helicopter was deployed to track a vehicle carjacked from a delivery driver across Adelaide on Sunday morning.

Patrols were called to South Tce following reports a Toyota ute had been stolen about 8.15am.

Police alleged the driver stepped out of his vehicle to make a delivery when a 37-year-old man, not known to him, entered the car.

The driver approached the man, who pushed him away and drove off towards Hutt St.

The delivery driver provided police with GPS tracking information for the ute, which patrols used to follow it, heading towards the southern suburbs.

PolAir and multiple patrols helped in the search for the stolen vehicle.

Police in the helicopter spotted the stolen car and began tracking it on Main South Rd before it stopped on Field St at McLaren Vale.

The man then fled the vehicle and patrols pounced to arrest him.

Crime scene investigators went to the scene to examine the stolen ute before it was returned to the owner.

The 37-year-old man of no fixed place was charged with aggravated robbery and illegal use of a motor vehicle.

He was refused bail and will appear in the Christies Beach Magistrates court on Monday.
