Police arrest restaurant break-in suspect, 27, on banks of River Torrens

A young man has jumped into the River Torrens in a crazy bid to evade capture after allegedly breaking into a restaurant. He was immediately taken into custody by patrols lining the bank.

A man has jumped into the River Torrens in an attempt to evade capture after allegedly breaking into a city restaurant.

Around 11:50pm on Friday, a member of the public contacted police to report he saw a man behaving suspiciously near Jolleys Boathouse restaurant on Jolleys Lane in the Adelaide CBD.

The witness was able to provide a description of the suspect and also noted a broken restaurant window nearby.

Eastern District patrols spotted a man matching the description running from the area.

The man was seen to throw items in to the River Torrens before he jumped into the river in an attempt to avoid police.

Officers positioned themselves on either side of the river and the man eventually swam to the bank where he was arrested without incident.

A 27-year-old man from Hillcrest was charged with serious criminal trespass, theft and unlawful possession.

He was refused police bail and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court next week.
