One Nation’s elusive candidate Sarah Game has won one of the last two Legislative Council seats, fronting media for the first time after the March 19 state election.

In her first public appearance, new One Nation MLC Sarah Game has taken aim at immigration and said children’s education is among her top priorities.

Ms Game was on Wednesday announced as winner of one of the last two remaining seats in the Legislative Council, alongside the Labor Party’s Russell Wortley.

She is One Nation’s first candidate elected to SA parliament.

The veterinarian issued a statement saying she would push for a review of the Emergency Management Act, under which Covid-19 measures are introduced, a plebiscite on recreational marijuana use and changes to abortion laws.

The former teacher, who shied away from interviews following the March 19 election, said in a statement that ensuring schools were focused on “the basics – reading, writing and arithmetic” was at the top of her agenda.

“I’m passionate about improving the lives of children and young people in this state and being a voice for those that are most vulnerable,” she said.

“I’ll also be pushing hard for South Australia to fully and openly participate in the Royal Commission that (party leader) Pauline Hanson has demanded into the management of the pandemic by all Australian governments.”

Also front of mind was putting pressure on the state government to fix the “broken health system” and addressing the “housing crisis” making it difficult for South Australians to buy or rent a home.

Senator Hanson will push for a ban on foreign housing ownership and to cap immigration at 100,000 people a year.

Ms Game – One Nation’s first candidate elected in SA – said the country’s immigration levels must be sustainable.

“I want to be an advocate for the most vulnerable people in our community – people

suffering mental health issues, people facing homelessness, people in poverty, people living

with disabilities – and be a voice for those ignored by the other parties,” she said.

Until Wednesday, Ms Game has made no comment about her likely election and no photo of her had been released.

Party leader Senator Pauline Hanson admitted earlier this month she was yet to meet her candidate and asked the media to “respect her privacy” until her position in parliament was confirmed.

Little was known about Ms Game, who did not appear on the party’s social media profiles and website.

Her mother Jennifer Game had been the party’s lead upper house candidate but gave that spot up after the party decided she would instead contest a Senate position during the federal election.

Former party state administrator Steve Burges claimed Ms Game’s daughter was a “captain’s pick” who could be trusted to give the seat up to make way for her mother, if she did not win a place in the Senate.

Jennifer Game – the party’s South Australian leader – said there was “no chance whatsoever that I would take that (Legislative Council) seat”.

Russell Wortley, who has sat in the Legislative Council since 2006, took the last spot in Wednesday’s Legislative Council count at U City on Franklin Street.

Labor’s Kyam Mayer, Reggie Martin, Tung Ngo and Ian Hunter had already taken places among the first nine seats to be declared after the poll.

The Liberals’ Michelle Lensink, Dennis Hood, Nicola Centofanti and Laura Curran also snared seats, along with The Greens’ Robert Sims.
