Tennis fan Denis Delic scored the chat of a lifetime, when world number one player Novak Djokovic came to the balcony of his North Adelaide hotel.
Mr Delic and friends headed to the Majestic M Suites on Sunday about noon, hoping to catch a glimpse of some of the world’s best tennis players who are in quarantine at the hotel.
Following a tip that Djokovic possibly had a workout room at the back of the hotel, the group headed around to Wellington Square.
“Novak being from Serbia and I’m from Bosnia, so I was really excited and I was hoping to see him,” Mr Delic, of Fulham Gardens, said.
“As soon as I saw someone come out of the room I yelled out Novak’s nickname, Djole, which is short for his surname.”
Mr Delic said soon after, Djokovic appeared on the balcony.
“He walked out and took his hoodie off and straight away started talking,” he said.
“I asked general stuff, how are you going, are you excited to be here.
“He made a joke that he kind of felt like he was in a jail, but that it is what it is and they were all in the same boat.”
Mr Delic said Djokovic was “very kind and humble” during the exchange, which was all in Serbian, and thanked them for coming out.
“We’re probably going to go for a walk tonight as well,” he said.
“My friend is hoping to see Serena.”
Djokovic, along with Rafael Nadal, Simona Halep, Dominic Thiem, sisters Serena and Venus Williams and Naomi Osaka, arrived in Adelaide last Thursday.
They were taken into quarantine at the Majestic M Suites, but have been given exemptions from quarantine to practise at Memorial Drive, subject to strict conditions.
The players will compete in the A Day at the Drive tournament at Memorial Drive on January 29, a warm-up tournament ahead of the Australian Open.
